Life with Joulie

One of the issues with adopting an older pet, is they are pretty much set into whatever bad habits they are going to have. I found this out the hard way with Skip, and Joulie is no different. Well, she is a bit different. Joulie is not a biter although this may be due to the fact that she has all of seven teeth. unnamed (7)While Skip wanted nothing but to sleep most days and every walk was a commitment to carry him at least a mile, Joulie is usually found stalking a chicken or one of her toys. She is a tug of war nut and a tried and true attention whore. She is staring at me as I type this and any moment will make another attempt to lie down across my keyboard.

unnamed (5)Joulie is incredibly smart and has learned to use “inside voice,” fairly consistently. I just have to try to train Mike to stop antagonizing her and they will both have it down pat.

She has absolutely no respect for personal space. I would like to leave a bit of mystery in our relationship and insist on having the bathroom to myself. This one is hard fought, but she seems to be catching on to “Joulie, there are some things we do alone.”

She also likes to walk up the middle of any road. I thought most dogs would love grass and woods and dirt paths. Skip also preferred the asphalt. I don’t understand.

I always complained about the dog wanting to sleep in my bed. I blamed the dog only to be forced to admit that it’s my own damn fault. I guess we all have some habits to break. In my defense at least I don’t lick everything and everyone I come in contact with. Ick.

She is a lovely little creature and we will adjust. In the meantime she is prepping for her first magazine layout (another bad habit?)

  1. I assure you that we all become a bit more set in our ways as we get older. I think you’re doing a marvelous job of helping Joulie adapt to a whole new way of life, and I suspect that she will chill a bit more in a year or five. 🙂

I would love if it you could identify who the furkids on Joulie’s Friends page belong to!

  2. Perhaps Joulie likes walking on the sidewalk or asphalt for the same reason i do — i won’t step in anything nasty that way!
